Emily Carr

Emily Carr was one of Canada’s greatest artists. Although considered eccentric and not appreciated during her lifetime, today she is considered one of Canada’s greatest treasures. Not only was she a prolific painter, she was also an accomplished writer. Many Canadians were introduced to Emily Carr first as a writer, whose stories about the First Nation peoples were broadcast over the radio in the early 1940s, and then were then drawn to her paintings.

She is popular today because of her interest in the native peoples and her passion for a nature uncontaminated by man.

She has been compared to Edvard Munch, (lines featured to express emotion), Vincent van Gogh (swirling skies) and Georgia O’Keeffe (landscapes done by a woman).
