Junior Achievement

Purpose

To inspire, educate and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.  Junior Achievement is a not-for-profit organization financed by businesses, foundations, and individuals.

Description

Volunteers present, or assist in presenting, a prepared, age-appropriate Junior Achievement curriculum in the classroom. All training and materials are provided by Junior Achievement. Volunteers must commit to spending one day a week in the classroom for five consecutive weeks, usually 30-45 minutes per session, starting in January.

The elementary school program at Jacob Wismer covers the following topics:

Kindergarten - Ourselves which introduces the economic role of individuals.

First Grade - Our Families which discusses the role of families in the local economy.

Second Grade - Our Community which examines the responsibilities and opportunities available to those within a community.

Third Grade - Our City which considers economic development, local businesses, and career opportunities.

Fourth Grade - Our Region which features economic and business resources in state and regional economies.

Fifth Grade - BizTown program culminating in a Field Trip to the Junior Achievement facility where they can simulate the workings of an entire town. For this grade only, volunteers attend a 90 minute training session at JA and then participate in the full-day field trip.
