Monthly Challenge

( focus on one area of sustainability with simple new habits )

Each month we focus on one area of sustainability to improve.  October is Save Energy Month!

There are lots of simple ways you can save energy at home.  They’re especially important now, as the days get shorter and colder.  Try one energy-saving tip this month and establish a new habit!  Students, take charge and remind your  parents of these easy ways to save energy!

  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs.
  • Turn down the thermostat a few degrees.  Keep warm with a sweater instead of with fossil fuel!
  • Lower the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees F.
  •  Only run full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.  Wash clothes with cold water instead of hot.

Global Climate Strike

( participate in JW activities to raise awareness )

The Global Climate Strike of Sept. 20-27th, 2019 was organized by youth to raise awareness of climate change.  We encourage students to participate both Friday, Sept. 27th and EVERY FRIDAY by:

  • Adding a suggestion to the “I can help fight climate change!” banner by the front door.  Suggestions will be compiled and shared here on the Green Team page!
  •  Participating in the Sustainable Lunch/Snack Challenge on Friday, Sept. 27th and EVERY FRIDAY.  Choose one of the three challenges listed (see section below).  Then use the button below to tell us which challenge you completed!  Challenge your friends to complete one as well–let’s see how many JW students can complete a challenge!
  • Telling us how you think JW can become more sustainable. Use the button below to submit a suggestion–yours may be chosen to be the focus of a monthly challenge!

Sustainable Lunch/Snack Challenge

  1. Pack lunch (or snack) using no single-use packaging or utensils (no paper sacks, plastic bags, single-serve bags of anything, etc.)
  2.  Pack lunch (or snack) using locally sourced or minimally processed food items
  3.  Waste no food items at lunch or snack
